The sun was shining for the start of the 2016 TYMBA contest season with the first contest, The Halesowen Youth Marching Band Championships.
Once again the event was held at Himley Hall and Park as part of Dudley Borough’s annual Armed Forces Day event.
Three of the Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association’s National class bands competed; three time league champions Thurmaston Marching Brass were first to take to the arena, followed by newly promoted Spen Valley Scout and Guide Band who dedicated their performance to the late MP Jo Cox who represented Batley and Spen. The Wirral Sound were the final band to take part in the National Class.
Local showband The Comets Performance Ensemble then took to the arena for the Open Class, with former TYMBA band The Redhill Corps of Drums battling the traffic from Surrey to close the contest.
Continuing their win at last years National Championships, Thurmaston Marching Brass took home almost all of the silverware in the National Class with The Wirral Sound finishing as runners up winning the Percussion Section lead by TYMBA Solo Drummer Duncan McKay.
In the open class both the Comets Performance Ensemble and Redhill Corps of Drums earned themselves Silver Awards in Overall Musical Effect, Overall Visual Effect and Overall Performance.
